Nothing needs to listen for an inbound connection, so there’s no port to expose and no attack surface sitting open on a device that might be sitting in an unlocked bag or vehicle.

When the device eventually reconnects — after an hour, a day, or several weeks — it re-authenticates, reports what changed locally, and reconciles against the policy your team defined centrally. Nobody has to manually re-enroll it, rebuild it, or treat it as a special case. It just quietly rejoins the fleet.
